Vegas BABY!: 15 Tips to Stay… Healthy?
Summer’s just around the corner, and people are starting to plan their vacations. hippoCHAN and I went to Vegas last year for a week, and we had a blast! It was much longer than the typical weekend partying spree that most people enjoy, so I wanted to retain some level of healthiness on our trip.
Here are my tips on staying healthy in Vegas!
#1. Medical fridge. Did you know that some hotels have free medical fridges available at your request? It’ll be helpful… trust me. Just say you need to refrigerate your meds if they ask why you need it (which they probably won’t). The Bellagio definitely offers them. No microwave though… that would be hot stuff.
#2. Milk at Starbucks. It’s important to get your daily intake of calcium. So why not just ask for an extra cup and fill it with milk at the condiment bar. Starbucks will be your star cow.
#3. Fruity hydration. It’s blistering hot in Vegas, so there’s a risk of dehydration. Rehydrate at Starbucks by buying a bottled juice, and asking them to blend it with ice! It’s a custom slurpee!
#4. Frugal hydration. Buy water by the gallon and refill a smaller bottle. They’re the cheapest at ABC stores. We brought water everywhere because Vegas tap water tasted like sewage.
#5. Whole Foods. Did you know that Vegas had one in the South end? Grab some salads, cooked proteins, raw veggies and fruit… all of which you can store in your free medical fridge. MUAHAHAHA FREE STUFF!
#7. Makeshift bowl. You need something to wash your fruit and veggies in… but don’t let your food touch the sink. Think of all the spit and miscellaneous bodily fluids that have contaminated the porcelain. Grab your empty water gallon jug – puncture with a key – saw it into a bowl with a plastic knife. BOOM. Washing bowl.
You can also saw the water gallon into a flat sheet for a cutting board! We used ours to cut brie, which we also stored in our FREE medical fridge.
#8. Healthy snacks. Bring granola bars or fruit around with you to avoid purchasing overpriced junk. Sources of fibre here and there, plus adequate hydration, will help you avoid constipation. Nobody wants to be constipated in Vegas. No poos, no booze. What? (I’m getting weird.)
#9. Buffets. It’s hard not to stuff your face at a buffet. Feel free to do so – it’s your vacation anyway! But, try to fit in some milk, fruits and veggies. One glass of milk at a buffet meets your entire day’s requirement. Also, unsweetened ice tea is a great zero-calorie alternative to pop.
#10. Drinking. I don’t usually drink, but I know that calorie-for-calorie, shots are more efficient in achieving inebriation than beers. But please don’t insert the alcohol anywhere other than your mouth hole.
#11. Smokers. Walk ahead of them if you don’t want to inhale as much carcinogens as you would walking behind them. hippoCHAN and I went as far as holding our breath while darting through the death cloud of smoke.
#12. Workout. Make use of the hotel gym. You’re paying for it anyway. I hate you, Resort Fees.
#13. “Healthy” Smoothies. Don’t trust places that sell “healthy” smoothies. “Honey water” is just another term for sugary syrup. YOU’LL NEVER FOOL ME!
#14. Nutrition info. Some places offer display nutrition facts – make use of these. Consider calories, fat, sugar and sodium. But if you love Chipotle, turn your eyes away.
#15. Portions. There’s normal size. There’s super size. Then there’s ‘Merica size. Watch your portions and eat to satiety.
